Story

Obra Obscura is a earth-conscious local clothing company out of Santa Fe by Natalie Fragola. Dyes are locally grown or foraged and all fabrics are natural. The dyestuffs is cochineal, which is a native Southwestern beetle that grows on the pallet cactus, native flowers/plants and garden varieties such as roses, marigolds, hollyhock, cosmos, pincushion, to name a few, as well as food scraps like onion skins, avocado pits, and chlorophyll from vegetable stalks and old leaves. To create an even wider spectrum of color, Natalie manipulates the pH of each dye source by coaxing out certain shades with the use of acid or alkaline substances such as iron salts, citric acid or lemon juice, baking soda, and black tea. A variety of techniques for extraction are used, such as steeping and immersion dyeing, bundle dye or eco printing, ice dyeing, creating paint from the source and using direct application, shibori and tie-dye. When she can, she works outside and use collected rain water, the power of the sun to create a low overhead consumption of resources for her process.

Care Instructions

Hand or machine wash with room temp or cool water. PH neutral gentle soap, low tumble dry or line dry. Avoid drying in direct (New Mexico) sun for extended periods of time which can fade the color back (like all clothes) Some color may fade over time but that is part of the metamorphosis of your garment. Sew, and patch any deterioration for better character and longevity.
